Are rear view cameras for cars worth it?

Many people ask whether installing a backup camera on their car is worth the cost. To answer this, we need to ask what is risked by not installing a rear view camera. Back-over accidents are among the most common vehicular accidents. Even though almost all of our driving is in a forward direction, about 25% of all vehicular accidents occur while backing up.  The reason for this is obvious: it is much harder to avoid objects that you can’t see, and rear visibility is generally poorer than front visibility.

Drivers back into or back over all kinds of things including mailboxes, children’s toys, bicycles, lawn care equipment, shopping carts, fire hydrants, fence posts, parking barriers, cars in the driveway, expensive sports cars just passing by, and even people. “Backing collisions cause over 500 deaths and 15,000 injuries per year,” and recent statistics reveal that over 1000 backing accidents each year involve toddlers with about 100 resulting in death. If you were involved in one or more of these accidents, could you bear the costs of vehicular damage, loss of property, insurance deductibles and rising premiums, and peace of mind? What is it worth to you to reduce the risk of experiencing any of these losses?

There is a long history of evidence showing that rear view cameras help drivers avoid backing accidents. Lobbyists concerned with the safety of children presented overwhelming evidence to federal legislators, finally convincing them to require enhanced rear visibility standards on all new cars built in the United States. However, there are no retroactive requirements for older model cars, and the standards may not apply to some larger vehicles. So, if you want the benefits of enhanced visibility on your older vehicle, you will need to find an aftermarket backup camera.

So, are car backup cameras worth the cost? Well, that depends a bit on the cost. If you need to buy a new $40,000 vehicle to get one with a backup camera, you might not consider it worth it. If you price a fully installed, aftermarket rear view camera system at popular electronics stores or auto accessories shops, you may find systems for $500 – $1000 plus scheduled installation time at the shop. If your insurance deductible is $1000, now you start thinking maybe a backup camera is worth the cost.

But what if you could install a rear view camera system on your car, truck, or trailer in just minutes for under $300? Is reducing the likelihood of backing into a bicycle, a barrier, a car, or a child worth that small price? As a teenager, I witnessed a backing accident involving a station wagon and a 2-year-old girl. If the price of a backup camera could erase my mental images of the gravel embedded in that little girl’s legs, it would be more than worth it to me.

In our opinion, every car and truck should be equipped with enhanced rear visibility, and our mission is to make purchasing and installing a wireless backup camera system as affordable and as simple as possible. We pioneered the first fully wireless backup camera, and we have continued to improve it over the years. By removing the need to pay for installation technicians and by providing everything you need in one inexpensive package, we have helped thousands of drivers experience the convenience and safety of enhanced rear visibility. Now every driver can afford this essential safety equipment once considered a luxury only available in new, high-end models.

Don’t miss out. They are worth it!
